Full Time Fellowship Opportunity: Blueprint

Blueprint Schools Network is looking for Fellows for this coming year!

Blueprint Fellows play an integral role in heightening student achievement in schools across the country.  On a daily basis, Fellows build individualized lessons and plan activities that help to fill in academic gaps students may have to strengthen academic performance inside the classroom.  During the course of the year, Fellows are building strong relationships that help to increase each student’s self-confidence in and commitment to his/her education, helping to foster a positive future for each student.

While teachers have classrooms of 25 or 30 students, Fellows manage no more than 4 students at a time.  This allows for the individualization of remedial and supplemental instruction.  Fellows are charged with focusing on the individual needs of their students, helping to bolster and accelerate student achievement while helping to close any skill gaps that may exist.

Expectations:
Fellows have a variety of responsibilities that allow them to be an integral piece of their student’s educational experience.  Fellow responsibilities typically fall into one of the following categories: Instruction, Planning, Communication & Feedback, and Compliance.  Examples of duties that Fellows have that fall into these categories include:

Instruction:
-Carry out all the responsibilities of an academic tutor and ensure that students are constantly learning and being challenged.
-Observe, monitor, and assess students’ performance on a regular basis and record data to track student performance.
-Assist students in setting and reaching academic goals.
-Modify instruction based on student assessment results.
-Present subject matter to students using a variety of research-based instructional strategies centered on students’ individual needs.
-Work alongside school staff to broaden the academic and instructional resources available to students.

Planning:
-Prepare instructional activities that aid in mastering specific academic skills, including subject matter content and state-mandated and end-of-course assessments.
-Collaborate with appropriate classroom teachers, department administration and Fellow Coordinator to ensure that each student is on track with their classroom materials and instruction.

Communication & Feedback:
-Reach out to a student’s family at least once every two weeks to update the family on the student’s academic progress in tutorial.
-Develop a frequent and consistent line of communication between the student’s family and the school regarding a student’s academic status.

Blueprint Fellows are not employed by Blueprint Schools Network. The salary for a Fellow position is $20,000-$21,000 per school year depending on site location.  Depending on start date, salary may be pro-rated.  The Fellow position includes a benefits package.

Intern Spotlight: Adriana Calandra

By  Adriana Calandra, FCRH '15

I had a very interesting and enlightening internship experience at Random House Publishing LLC this past Spring 2014 semester. I had one senior advisor with whom I worked with closely, but was also a part of a larger team of six or so members of the Special Market - Sales department. In the first week of the internship, I was taught how to use most of the software that I would need to know throughout the course of the internship, including: inter-office shipping software, out-of-office shipping software, software to find and upload book jackets, software to look up any information imaginable on any book that Random House has published over the years, and also software used to put together presentations for potential clients. In addition, I was expected to have high working proficiency with applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel. Each morning, I would send out an email to the team in which I was interning under and ask them for specific projects on which I may be able to assist them that day. The majority of my projects worked on a day-to-day basis but more than a few carried on throughout the week or took a few weeks to complete.

Although information that I may have learned or work that I may have done during my internship does not directly relate to any of my courses or any coursework that I have done in the past, my new developed understanding of the applications used will certainly help me as I continue in my college career. In addition, my ability to manage my time has greatly improved. When I emailed my team and inquired about their projects each morning, they were mostly unaware of the projects that the other team members had also given me for that day. Each team member expected me to complete his or her project in a timely matter, no matter my other work for the day. Due to this, I believe that I am more capable of handling greater responsibility and delivering positive results despite a time crunch. This will not only aid me as I continue college but will also prove to be invaluable in my future career, whatever that career may be.

Speaking of a career path, I am still unsure of what mine will be, looking towards the future. Prior to the internship, I was certain that I intended to work for a publishing house, specifically in a marketing or sales department. After the internship, however, I am not so sure. I think that I would still like to work in the publishing industry but I am certain that it would not be in a sales department. I am currently leaning more towards the Edit department, which works closer with authors. This may sound like my internship was a failure but I consider it to be anything but that. I learned a great deal about the industry in which I hope to possibly pursue as well as myself through working at Random House. I don’t believe that I would have really understood the job in which I thought that I wanted unless I had given it a try first. Without this internship, I may have pursued a job in publishing sales and only realized after graduation that it isn’t for me. So while I still can’t name the exact position in which I plan to pursue after graduation, I feel like I am much closer to doing so thanks to my internship this semester at Random House.

Intern Spotlight: AJ Golio

By AJ Golio, FCRH '16

The story that I will always tell future prospective employers about my Public Relations internship at The Fresh Air Fund is about the first time I got a placement in a newspaper.

When I first began my internship, I knew absolutely nothing about PR. I hardly even knew what the two letters stood for. I originally applied because I wanted to get involved in non-profit work, and I figured that casting my net out wide would help my chances. Somehow the interview went well – I caught on quickly that they were looking to highlight my writing experience – and I arrived on the first day sitting between two Public Relations majors. Luckily, I was a quick learner, and was able to get the hang for dealing with the media from the instructions of my supervisors and from observing my peers. Mostly, however, I was on my own. Each intern was assigned to certain areas (I was in charge of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) and was given all of the media responsibility for those areas. This included responding to volunteer leaders and attempting to get placements in newspapers.

My first experience pitching a story to a newspaper was an experiment. All I had to work with was a vague guide of points that I was supposed to highlight. I stumbled through my first pitch, but miraculously managed to get a placement in their newspaper. This early confidence boost was what carried me through many other more disappointing experiences.

Maybe it was sheer luck and maybe it was good instincts, but that first experiment is what set the tone for the rest of my internship.
