PROGRAM OVERVIEW

After submitting an application to the program, mentors and mentees are matched based off commonalities in their personal and professional profiles. Participants will receive a notification on October 19th informing them of their pairing and providing more information on their partner. Throughout this year-long program, mentors and mentees meet and communicate regularly based off the agreed-upon terms of the Mentor-Mentee Covenant. Pairs are required to attend four Fordham-hosted Milestone events and check in regularly by completing scheduled Checkpoint surveys.

Current undergraduate juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply. To be admitted to the program, the student's application must be reviewed and approved by the Fordham Mentoring Team and he or she must complete a prerequisite training session through the Office of Career Services.

The Fordham Mentoring Program pairs motivated students with experienced alumni who share professional and personal expertise and guidance through a one-on-one year-long mentorship. Mentors and mentees take part in Fordham-hosted events and workshops, regular engagement surveys, mock interviews, resume reviews, and other networking opportunities to establish a meaningful relationship of value to both partners.

The program allows mentors to partner with Fordham faculty and staff in preparing students for successful and fulfilling lives as global leaders, enabling them to live out the charge of St. Ignatius to "go forth and set the world on fire!"

THE MENTEE

Mentees benefit from the partnership by working with an experienced and supportive professional. They learn to define their goals, express themselves professionally, and gain exposure to new ideas, perspectives, and environments. Mentee professionalism and commitment is central to the success of the Fordham Mentoring Program.

Who are the mentees?

The mentees are upperclassmen undergraduate students from the Gabelli School of Business, Fordham College at Lincoln Center, and Fordham College at Rose Hill. Applicants are among Fordham's most motivated students. To be admitted to the program, the student's application must be reviewed and approved by the Fordham Mentoring Team and he or she must complete a prerequisite training session in the Office of Career Services.

Who are the mentors?

Mentors may be alumni from any of Fordham's undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional schools. Mentors may also be friends of the University or parents of Fordham students. Each mentor thus has a unique understanding of the Fordham experience and a commitment to helping students achieve success.

Mentors must be at least three (3) years out from graduation but otherwise range in age, experience, and realm of expertise. Mentor professions include architects, lawyers, physicians, finance professionals, marketing executives, publishers—the list goes on! 

What if my mentor is not a perfect match?

As stated in the Match Notification Message, the golden rule of mentoring is that the experience is what you make of it. Students, your mentor may not have your "dream job" or be an identical match. Realize that as an experienced professional, your mentor has a breadth of advice – personal and professional – to share. The keys to success are not necessarily career-specific secrets but general skills, characteristics, and best practices.
So, be open-minded, curious, responsive, and remember the major thing you both have in common: your Fordham experience!

What are Milestone Events?

The offices of Alumni Relations and Career Services host four events each year to provide an opportunity for matched pairs to meet and for participants to engage the larger group. The focus and structure of these events varies. 

The first event, the Meet & Greet, welcomes participants, and provides an introduction and general overview of the program. The event allows mentors and mentees the opportunity to meet and discuss, and agree upon the terms and expectations of their mentoring relationship in the Mentor-Mentee Covenant Form.

The skills development workshop takes various forms, is held before the holiday break and typically focuses on the development of several important professional competencies. The event begins with a formal presentation on the topic by an industry expert and then groups have the opportunity to network and engage one another as part of a relevant workshop exercise. This typically means speed networking or resume reviews.

At the third event, held in the beginning of the spring semester, mentors and mentees are invited to network over a pre-game lunch before attending a Men’s Basketball home game. During the luncheon, a Fordham alumnus will present on any of several various topics. The concluding event, normally held in the spring before final exams, is the Mentor Appreciation Dinner. At this event, participants acknowledge the contributions of their partners, and in a particular way students and the university staff express their appreciation for the time and service of the program’s mentors. Participants dine at industry-focused tables, allowing for themed professional discussions.

What if I have to miss a milestone event?

Pairs are strongly encouraged to attend all four milestone events, however sometimes other commitments may present scheduling conflicts. As long as notice of the need to reschedule is provided in advance of the event and the pair makes plans to meet in lieu of the event, he or she may be excused from attending. Note that the full program schedule is posted on the program’s website in advance.

What is considered an appropriate mentoring relationship?

As a mentor, it is critical to remember that you are a role model. Though a trusting friendship may (and should) be the foundation of a mentorship, remember your mentee is not your peer. Appropriate meeting places include your place of business (job shadowing), a public place, or one of Fordham's campuses, while inappropriate meeting places include bars, malls, residences, and dorm rooms. Consuming alcohol with or buying alcohol for your mentee is strictly prohibited.

May a mentor-mentee pair remain matched after the end of the program, or renew their through next academic year?

When the student graduates, it is up to the mentor and mentee whether they would like to retain a mentorship and to outline how the nature and terms of this relationship may be different. If a student and mentor are looking to extend the relationship to a second year, they may do so after notifying the Fordham Mentoring Team.

Spotlight on: The Fordham Alumni Mentoring Program

What is it?

Interested students will be paired with young alumni in their respective fields of interest. The relationships cultivated give students an opportunity to network with the young professionals with similar career interests as themselves, and gain insight into their field! Mentors provide invaluable career guidance to mentees throughout this unique networking opportunity.  

The Fordham Alumni Mentoring Program is beneficial for students in all stages of their career development process. Having an alumni mentor who has gone down a similar path of career exploration will undoubtedly enhance the student’s ability to develop personal career goals.   Mentors and mentees meet informally throughout the program based on shared goals and expectations.

Employer Spotlight: ICAP

This Employer Spotlight is written by Chris Quagliata, U.S. Treasuries Voice Broker. Chris graduated from Fordham with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, as a member of the class of 2011. He interned with ICAP before getting hired full time. Here, Chris speaks about his experience as an intern at ICAP, how he got where he is today, and how his Fordham education helped him along the way.

I first started at ICAP as an intern in the summer of 2010. Like most college students, I was very unsure of the type of industry I wanted to get into after graduation. As late as junior year, I was still back-and-forth between finance and the sports media industry. I worked in the sports department at WFUV for four years, was the department manager during my senior year, and even did an internship at Westwood One radio in the spring of 2010. That being said, I knew I needed to spend the summer following my junior year in a structured internship program within the finance industry to give me an idea of which field I wanted to enter.

I found out about the internship at ICAP through the Fordham careers website [CareerLink] and by attending the career fairs. The process began with an on-campus interview, then an assessment center at ICAP’s office, and wrapped up with phone interview with the Global Head of Graduate Recruitment. I was accepted into the eight-week internship program and spent my summer rotating around the various broking desks and learning about the different products and the overall structure of ICAP. At the end of that internship, I interviewed with senior management for a full time position and was hired to start in the September of 2011 after I graduated from Fordham.

My first three weeks as a full-time ICAP employee were in London. The company flew everyone from the graduate program globally to ICAP’s headquarters in central London for global financial markets training. The training proved useful at filling in any gaps in my knowledge.

I really can’t overstate how great an experience it was going to London, especially for someone like me who had never been there before. The best parts of the trip was becoming friends with ICAP grads from around the world, being at the company headquarters and seeing the office, and exploring the city itself. We all developed a strong camaraderie and spent our free time together every day after work. The grads from London took us all over the city on nights and weekends, and showed us the best places to visit and tour. I really can’t think of a better way to kick off my first full-time job.

When we got back to the U.S. and started in the office here, the real challenge began. What’s great about this graduate program is that you are given a real opportunity to find what place in the company best fits you. All of us rotated around the different broking desks within the company before finding a permanent home. The goal of the program is essentially to match graduates and the desks that are hiring. Matches are usually based on personality because every desk has one that is very unique. I rotated around nine different desks and got a good idea of my tastes; which products I liked, which I didn’t, and the desks that fit my personality. Ultimately, each desk wants someone eager and ready to work, and who they can see themselves sitting next to five days a week, 52 weeks a year.

But make no mistake: the rotation process is challenging and difficult at times because of the uncertainty and competition involved. It is your job to make a good impression on each desk and also put in the effort to get placed in the seat you want most. The process is what you make of it. For the most part, you are expected to network your way around each desk, as well as throughout the company as a whole. The graduate team is always there to back you up and provide any assistance you may need, but what makes the process so great is that you largely have full control over the impression you leave and ultimately where you land in the company.

After about three months of rotations, I was finally placed on the U.S. Treasuries desk, which is, not surprisingly, the place I kind of always knew I’d end up. I recently passed my one-year anniversary with the company and signed my new contract with the desk a few weeks ago. It has been a great year for me because I enjoy what I do and have seen some of what it is like to work on Wall Street. Working with the capital markets, and interdealer broking specifically, is a great business and one with a lot of perks.

The part of the job that most excited people is how this business is centered on cultivating client relationships, whether that be taking clients out to some of New York City’s best bars and restaurants, sporting events, or concerts. I’ve been to Yankees games, Rangers games, concerts at Madison Square Garden, a score of great restaurants in the city, and so on and so forth. I’d be lying if I told you that part of the job wasn’t fun. The job itself is an exciting, fast-paced environment with a team-oriented, yet entrepreneurial aspect to it. You have an opportunity as an entry-level employee to pick up your own clients from a very early stage in your career, and have the potential to make a nice living. I have already met a lot of U.S. Treasuries traders on the Street and have begun to build my network. Once again, this job is all about what you make of it.

Fordham is a great place: I know, I’ve been there. Use all the tools Career Services provides for you to help find the right job. Take the classes for what they are: an important foundation for what you’ll bring into the working world. If you ask me, ICAP is a great place to work because of the tremendous growth potential there is for someone straight out of college. I have certainly found it to be that for me and then some.

RSHM Volunteer Opportunity!

Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) Volunteer Program

RSHM is currently accepting applications for one year domestic (U.S.) volunteers to serve with the RSHM working in diverse ministries, such as pastoral ministry, education, social work, or work in a law office.

About RSHM:
The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary have dedicated their lives in service to others through their various ministries: education, pastoral ministries, retreat and spiritual direction, health care, social work, peace and justice advocacy, to promote life, especially in those situations where it is denied, devalued, or diminished.  

About the program:
One year volunteers will commit themselves to the Five Program Values: community, simple living, social justice, zeal, and spirituality.  The program is very similar to the Jesuit Volunteer Corp, asking volunteers to live in intentional community, focus on social justice, simple living and spirituality. They have extended their deadline and are still accepting applications for this September.
