On January 25th, Harlem Children’s Zone Preventive Programs will host a winter job fair for social workers and professionals in the field of social services, who want a new, exciting career opportunity.
 
Preventive Services are comprehensive, neighborhood-based programs that provide supportive services through counseling to children and families. HCZ operates four foster-care preventive programs: the Family Support Center, the Family Development Program, Truancy Prevention and Project CLASS. These programs provide need-based services, including casework counseling, advocacy and referrals to external providers and more intensive supports. In each case, the ultimate goal is to connect our families with the services and resources they need to become more independent and stable, ultimately preventing foster care placement.

Upcoming Internal Audit Career Fair: Iona

The Westchester/Fairfield Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (“WFIIA”) is pleased to announce its 2015 internal audit college internship program (“Program”). September 17: Accounting & Finance Career and Internship Fair

The Accounting & Finance Career and Internship Fair is coming up this Wednesday, September 17th! Are you ready? Make sure you're prepared and make the most of the fair.. and check out our tips for rocking the career fair below:

1. Get your resume reviewed by a Career Counselor.
Make an appointment via CareerLink. Make sure your resume focuses on any finance work you’ve done, and try to look at each experience on your resume through the lens of the finance world. Add a relevant coursework section with classes you’ve taken in business, math or finance.

2. Do your research!
Check out the full list of employers that will be attending the fair on CareerLink > Events. Make sure you know information about the companies that interest you most, and see what they might be hiring for! At the fair, engage the recruiter in a real conversation about the company and opportunities they have available.

3. Dress for the job you want.
This means a suit. Treat the career fair like an interview.

4. Prepare questions.

Don’t be afraid to write your questions for employers down. Often, asking relevant and intriguing questions can be impressive to a recruiter and could help you stand out from the crowd.

5. Bring your resume.
Print out numerous copies, and bring them in a folder so they stay neat. You can purchase 10 sheets of resume paper from our office for 25 cents.

6. Ask for business cards.
Make sure to send a follow up or thank you email after the Career Fair to stay in touch if you're interested in the job or internship.

Anxiety-Inducer to Confidence-Booster: How to Absolutely Rock Your Next Career Fair

It had officially begun. The second semester of my senior year. What was I going to do with my life? What was I passionate about? Where could I find true happiness doing something that I love? More importantly, how on earth was I ever going to pay back all of my student loans?

These are questions that lay heavily on many peoples’ minds, I’m sure. And so, what better way to solve all of them than by attending one of these mysterious, incredible intimidating, ‘I’m-sure-these-are-just-for-finance-majors’ (which they’re not) Career Fairs!  Urged forward by my desire to find myself (and perhaps also by a nagging mother), last year I ventured out into strange lands, conquered the unknown, and gained a bucketful of confidence by attending the Career Fair. And if I can do it, so can you!

Here are a few tips that will help everyone go from panicky mess to suave job/internship candidate:

Tip No. 1: Be Prepared
The unfailing Boy Scout motto can serve us all here. Bring at least ten copies of your resume, preferably printed on resume paper (available at your friendly Career Services Office!). Make sure it’s in tip-top shape, as you’ll be handing it out to several potential employers. Resume review is also available at Career Services, so think about going in for an appointment some time before. But if you can’t, at least have someone look it over for you beforehand to make sure there are absolutely no errors! And don’t forget to dress to impress! Employers are going to speaking to hundreds of other students during the fair. You don’t want to be remembered as the kid with a hole in his shirt. Come in professional attire, looking neat and clean, and don’t worry about the snow ruining your best suit. There’ll be a coat check that day to help you look your best.

Tip No. 2: Take a Minute (or Ten)

Once you get to the fair, it’s going to be incredibly overwhelming, especially if you’ve never been to one before. There are fancy people in suits walking around everywhere, that girl you have Philosophy with is apparently the most sophisticated person you’ve ever met (look how great she looks! Did you hear what intelligent questions she asked and OMG is that novel her resume??). There doesn’t seem to be a single welcoming face in the crowd!
Don’t worry. All is not as it seems. Take a minute. Check your coat. Look at the provided list of employers who are there, and, if you haven’t already (see Tip No. 1), identify a few employers that you’d really like to speak with. And maybe don’t approach your dream company while you’re still out of breath from walking up the stairs. Work up to it. Maybe talk to the people who don’t have anyone at their table and smiled at you (there’s a welcoming face!), even if you don’t quite think you’d like to work there. Learn more about their company. Practice your elevator pitch. Warm yourself up. By the third person you talk to, you’ll look just as sophisticated as Philosophy Girl.

Tip No. 3: Follow Up
Now that you sound super-confident and totally know what you’re doing and are definitely going to land that internship, don’t be afraid to follow up! Make sure you get the contact information of people who had great conversations with. Shoot them an e-mail afterwards. Remind them of your conversation, and thank them for taking the time to speak with you. Employers remember students who follow up, and it always helps to be remembered!

So there you have it. Three simple tips to turn that looming Career Fair from anxiety-inducer to confidence-booster. Here’s something else to get excited about. Planning on attending a Spring Career Fair?

When are they? The LC Career & Internship Fair: Arts, Media & Service is on Wednesday, January 29th from 3-6pm in the Pope Auditorium. The Spring 2014 Career & Internship Fair is coming up on Wednesday,  February 12th from 1-4pm in the McGinley Ballroom.


Check out a few tips listed below to make sure you're ready to make the most of it:


1. Have your resume reviewed by a Career Counselor.
Make an appointment via CareerLink. Stop by the Plaza at Lincoln Center today and tomorrow from 11am-2pm, or at the Rose Hill office (McGinley 224) between 1 and 3pm for a quick review. 


2. Do some research on the attending employers.
Figure out which companies most interest you and make sure you know a bit about them. You'll want to be able to engage the recruiter in a real conversation about the company and the internship/job opportunities they have available.


3. Come up with some questions for each company you're interested in.
Write them down. Bring your questions with you, and ask away to begin a conversation!


4. Print out multiple copies of your resume.
Bring them in a folder so they stay neat. Make sure you have a pen.


5. Dress for Success.

Metro-North Internship Fair: RSVP Today

Metro-North Railroad will be hosting an Internship Fair on January 10^th!   

The Internship program offers undergraduate and graduate level students in most majors an opportunity to gain a firsthand experience of the daily operations of Metro-North Railroad.  Internships are available throughout the entire organization and tailor to many areas of study.  While working with a designated department at Metro-North, all interns are given project-based assignments.  In conjunction with their assignments, interns will participate in a series of events throughout the summer that will expand their knowledge of the transportation industry beyond their designated project. 

The summer internship program runs from the end of May through the middle of August.  Interns are regularly scheduled to work 35 hours per week.  Students at the undergraduate level will be compensated at an hourly rate of $15 and students at the graduate level will be compensated at an hourly rate of $17.

INSIDER TIP #1: 
Research the attending employers that interest you to make sure you know about them. You'll want to engage the recruiter in a real conversation about the company and the opportunities they seem to have available. Impress the recruiter with your knowledge about them and they'll be impressed with you! Have questions ready to ask about the specific job or company.

INSIDER TIP #2:
Have someone look at your resume! Ideally, it should be a Career Counselor in our office, but if you don't have time to come in, have a parent, friend, or professor take a look. Your resume should be spotless.. and an accurate representation of yourself. The more eyes that look at your resume, the more flawless it will be.

INSIDER TIP #3
Come prepared. This means bringing multiple copies of your resume (printed on resume paper) and dressing professionally.

Stop by the Office of Career Services to get resume paper. We'll also have a coat check/suit check on the day of the Fair if you're worried about wrinkling your suit in class beforehand. Just swing by. 

INSIDER TIP #4
Collect business cards to follow up! Recruiters consistently tell us that the most impressive students are those who follow up. They meet hundreds of students on Career Fair day, and taking the extra time to write a quick thank you note to the recruiters you meet will go a long way.

2013 Women’s Foreign Policy Group Mentoring Fair registration is now open.
